FIRST GEN VETS
Developing Veteran Leadership Scholars through a first generation student veteran learning community.
Texas A&M’s recognition as a military-friendly university attracts many student veterans and, as a result, numerous campus departments provide programs and support to ensure Aggie student veteran success. One of these is the First Generation Veterans learning community, a yearlong comprehensive program composed of first generation undergraduate veterans, as well as faculty and staff from across the university. Participation in the First Gen Vets program requires registration in ALEC 485, a yearlong course that can be either zero credit hours, or fulfill one credit hour of electives, if degree plans allow.
Created and led by the Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the First Gen Vets program is uniquely designed to:
- Increase knowledge and associated skills of first generation veterans in the attributes necessary to be a successful college student.
- Increase first generation veterans’ support networks with campus resources, other veterans, faculty, and staff.
