Meet Sergeant Major (SGM) Donald Freeman, (USA Retired)
Assistant Director, Don & Ellie Knauss Veteran Resource & Support Center (VRSC), Texas A&M University (Since 2015)
SGM Freeman served for 28 years as a US Army Armor Non-commissioned Officer, holding numerous leadership positions, culminating as the 2nd Infantry Division, G-3 SGM. He is a graduate of the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, Class ’55 and his deployments include both combat and peacekeeping operations across the globe. SGM Freeman’s formal higher education assignments include a four year assignment to Texas A&M, SROTC, as the Chief Military Science Instructor where he developed curriculum and intense training scenarios in basic tactics, techniques and procedures for more than 700 Texas A&M Army SROTC Cadets annually.
As the Assistant Director, SGM Freeman ensures that the daily operations provide support to Veteran & Military-Affiliated students. Noted achievements include Aggie Veteran Scholarship procedure development and implementation, establishing a relationship with Deloitte and May’s Business School to instruct their Career Opportunity Redefinition & Exploration (CORE) Leadership Program, and integration of the Veteran’s Evaluation of Talent + Matching Assistance Program. SGM Freeman has presented on best practices for Military –Connected Students at the Southern Association of Colleges and Employers (SOACE) conference and Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA) symposium on Military-Connected Students and has been published in The Journal of Academic Librarianship. SGM Freeman is the recipient of the Congressional Veterans Commendation Award from Congressman Bill Flores (2018), and the Texas A&M Randy Matson ’67 Association of Former Students Award (2020).
SGM Freeman and his wife Lorrie enjoy raising 3 of their adopted grandchildren, exploring new cities, visiting the beaches of Texas, and frequenting amusements parks with family.
