VA WORK STUDY PROGRAM
The Work-Study Allowance Program offers an additional non-taxable allowance to students in return for performing VA-related activities at VA-approved site locations. It serves as a supplemental VA education benefit providing additional funding that allows a student to pursue and accomplish educational goals.
The Don & Ellie Knauss Veteran Resource & Support Center (VRSC) is a VA-approved site location. Our VA Work-Study students (aka student workers) are an integral part of our daily operations and as such, are expected to complete a nationally certified peer leadership course through Eduology provided at no-cost by the VRSC. With a full-time staff of only four people, our certified student workers provide the VRSC with the capability to expand the reach of our programs and resources to our military students. The VRSC also provides operational space for Military Admissions, Academic Success Center, Career Center, U. S. Dept. of Veteran Affairs, and Texas A&M University System (TAMUS), enhancing how we “Serve Well Those Who Have Served.”

The student must be enrolled in and pursuing an approved college degree, vocational or professional program of education at a rate of 3/4 time or greater and receiving benefits under one of the following VA education programs:
- Chapter 30: The Montgomery GI Bill
- Chapter 31: Veteran Readiness & Employment
- Chapter 32: The Post-Vietnam Era Veterans’ Educational Assistance Program
- Chapter 33: The Post-9/11 GI Bill / Fry Scholarship
- Chapter 35: Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program
- Chapter 1606: The Montgomery GI Bill – Selected Reserve
- Edith Nourse Rogers STEM Scholarship
- National Call to Service Program
Work-Study participants earn an hourly educational benefit/wage equal to the federal minimum wage, or the state minimum wage, whichever is greater (currently $7.25 hourly). The earnings the student receives under this program are an extension of their educational entitlements, are tax-exempt and are not considered as income for reporting purposes.
The VRSC offers opportunities to serve in the following areas:
- Administrative Support
- Programming Support
- Marketing/Communications
- VALOR Program Leadership
- Campus Partnership Support
